WOLFVILLE – Brendan Sellan (men’s hockey) and Samantha Russell (women’s basketball) have been named Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending February 4.

Sellan, a second-year business administration student, scored a pair of goals at home on Wednesday night for the Axemen, helping them earn a key point in clinching their playoff berth. He scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, but his goal with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game 3-3 was key for Acadia who were in a battle for the final playoff spot heading into the final two weeks of play. Sellan also assisted on the opening goal of the night by Corson Hopwo, just 16 seconds into play.

Russell, a third-year business student, helped the Axewomen to a 68-52 victory over the StFX X-Women on the road as they continue to battle atop the AUS for seeding heading into the AUS women’s basketball championship in late February. She had seven points, with a steal and block in the victory, but it was her 19 rebounds that were key for Acadia. The total is only two rebounds off the program’s all-time single-game record held by Sarsha Cadle since Nov. 16, 2019 against Memorial. Of her 19 rebounds, 17 were defensive boards.

This week men’s hockey welcomes UPEI on Tuesday night in a rescheduled game from Saturday. They then host Dalhousie on Friday night in their final conference game of 2023-24. Puck drop for both games is 7 p.m.

Basketball is home on Saturday night to host Saint Mary’s, while volleyball welcomes UNB for a pair of matches. Friday night is 7 p.m., while Saturday is 1 p.m. The basketball games on Saturday will follow at 6 and 8 p.m.

The Acadia athletes of the week are presented by McDonald's.
