Rooney and Thompson named Acadia athletes of the week
Sophie Rooney and Nate Thompson (swimming) have been named the Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending March 9.
Rooney Leads Axewomen with C-Final Victory
Rooney, a third-year business major, delivered a standout performance at the 2025 U SPORTS Swimming Championships in Toronto, competing against the nation’s best. She highlighted her weekend with a C-Final victory in the 200m backstroke, finishing 17th overall in Canada with a time of 2:16.09.

200m Backstroke – 1st in C-Final (2:16.09, 17th overall)
50m Backstroke – 7th in C-Final (29.66, 23rd overall)
50m Butterfly – 2nd in C-Final (28.17, 18th overall)
100m Backstroke – 3rd in C-Final (1:03.24, 19th overall)
400m Medley Relay – 17th overall (Rooney, Collins, Bennett, Popp – 4:23.98)
400m Freestyle Relay – 17th overall (Rooney, Popp, Collins, McGrath - 4:06.48)
Rooney’s C-Final win in the 200m backstroke was one of the top individual performances of the meet for Acadia, and her contributions across multiple events helped showcase the Axewomen on the national stage.
Thompson Delivers Strong National Championship Performance
Thompson, a second-year business administration student, put together a strong performance at the U SPORTS Championships, competing in multiple events against Canada’s top university swimmers. His best result came in the 400m medley relay, where he helped Acadia to a 17th-place finish alongside teammates David Harvie, Marcus Vaillancourt, and Lucas Mazier.

Thompson’s relay performance and consistency in multiple individual events demonstrated his competitiveness and determination at the national level, capping off an impressive season for the Axemen.
