Football's Jones selected fourth overall in CFL Draft

TORONTO, ON – Fourth year Acadia Axemen receiver Brian Jones is off to the Toronto Argos after being selected fourth overall in last night's CFL Draft.

Jones, from Enfield, N.S., finished the 2015 AUS season first in receiving with 45 catches for 630 yards and four touchdowns. In 2014, Jones was named as the AUS Most Valuable Football Player. In the last two seasons, Jones was named as a CIS All-Canadian. Jones caught 113 passes for 1,392 yards and eight touchdowns with the Axeman

In the CFL's last Prospect List for the 2016 Draft, Jones was ranked tenth after starting in eighteenth position. At the CFL Combine in March, Jones wowed many of the CFL scouts with impressive results in most of the testing and 1-on-1 drills.

Jones was one of the biggest receivers in this class at the this year's CFL Combine, but he showed that he can hang with some of the other guys in terms of explosiveness and agility. He was second at the national combine (and third overall) with a 10 foot, 8.5 inch broad jump and first at the combine (third overall) with a 4.13-second shuttle run. He also finished fourth in the three-cone drill with a time of 6.92 seconds, and he did very well with route-running and pass-catching in the one-on-one battles as noted by the CFL Prospects List.

At 6' 4", 230 lbs., Jones is not only an exceptional receiver but also can offer his athletic abilities on special teams and downfield blocking on offence.

Axemen Head Coach Jeff Cummins was happy to see Jones go high in the draft. "I am proud and very happy for Brian. He has worked very hard and wants to be great", pointed out Cummins. "He deserves everything he gets and the Axemen Family is very happy to see our brother fulfill his dream."

Jones was selected third highest among Acadia Axemen drafted into the CFL since 1953. Legendary CFL and Acadia receiver Al Charuk was also chosen by the Argos in 1975 as the second overall pick. In 1991, defensive back/safety Dan Murphy was the Edmonton Eskimos' first round pick – third overall.

Jones was the only AUS athlete chosen in this year's CFL draft.
