Basketball announces commitment of N.B. native Speedy

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia University and Acadia men's basketball head coach Kevin Duffie announced today the commitment of Fredericton, N.B. native Brett Speedy, who will join the Axemen squad this coming fall.

A 6' 2" point guard from Leo Hayes High School, Speedy is a member of the Under 17 Basketball New Brunswick provincial team. This past season, Speedy was a NBIAA Silver medalist with the Leo Hayes basketball team.

"We are excited to welcome Brett to the Acadia family. He comes from a strong basketball pedigree and a second generation of Acadia alumni", pointed out Duffie.

"We have watched him grow and develop over the past couple of years and we expect him to reach a high level as a basketball player and as a person at Acadia. We love what he brings from a leadership and basketball IQ perspective and we think he impacts our culture positively right from the beginning", added Duffie.

Speedy will be working on a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree during his time at Acadia. Both parents, Jeff Speedy and Linda MacKinnon are graduates of Acadia, so he is familiar with the University and its campus. Speedy's father is the current head coach of the UNB Varsity Reds women's basketball team, while his mother is a former basketball Axewoman (Axette) from 1987 to 1992.

"Acadia is a great school and has a great basketball program. I think I fit well into their system and we have a legit shot at a national championship in the future", said Speedy. "I am looking forward to my opportunity to go out and fight everyday and learn as much as I can from the veteran players in order to have an impact and help our team win."

The Axemen finished the 2016-17 season with a close semi-final loss the eventual AUS champions Dalhousie and will be the official host of the 2017-18 U SPORTS men's basketball championship this coming March 8-11, 2018 at Halifax's Scotiabank Center.
