Stu Aberdeen – Fri. Sept. 28 - Game 1: StFX vs Carleton
The Carleton Ravens handed the St. Francis Xavier X-Men a 70-point loss as they took the first game of the Stu Aberdeen tournament 125-55.
The Ravens began the game confidently with a 14-0 run against the X-Men and kept their momentum to go up 34-14 after the first quarter. Carleton had an almost identical second quarter, putting the score at 66-29 after the first half.
Carleton's TJ Lall (Cambridge, Ont.) lead the team's first half with 7 points, who shot perfectly from the field.
The pace did not slow down for the Ravens in the second half, who went on to dominate the rest of the game.
Carleton was able to set up Yasiin Joseph (Ottawa, Ont.) with multiple wide-open threes, and did not make a mistake on any of his 5 chances. He shot a perfect 7-7 from the field and added 2 free throws to notch 21 points. This incredible performance earned him the Subway Player of the Game award.
As a team, the Ravens shot 43 of 72 (59.7%) from the field and an impressive 19 of 34 (55.9%) from three. They also recorded 15 steals over the 40-minute game.
Though the X-Men shot well from three, their FG% needed to be better to defeat a Carleton squad that was also capable of turning on a strong defence.
Carleton plays Bishop's University tomorrow, where Friday's two winning teams will face off.
The X-Men play the home team Acadia tomorrow night at 8 pm.
Stu Aberdeen – Fri. Sept. 28 - Game 2: Acadia vs Bishop's
The Bishop's Gaiters were able to hold off the Acadia Axemen in the closing minutes of the game, picking up a 76-72 win during Friday night's second game of the Stu Aberdeen Tournament.
The first quarter of the game was close - a back and forth battle that saw Acadia out on top by just 1 at its end – 15-14. Axeman Trevone Grant (Nassau, Bahamas.) lead the quarter with five points.
The second quarter was a different story, where Bishop's started to capitalize on their chances in the paint and sinking more of their threes. Acadia watched their lead slip away and trailed 31-25 going into halftime.
Determined not to let the Gaiters run away with the lead, the Axemen put in Jacques Lukusa (Ottawa, Ont.) who exploded with 12 points in the third quarter. The Axemen came within five points of the Gaiters before the final break.
The Axemen battled hard in the last frame to get within 2 points of their opponents, but Bishop's was not about to let Acadia come back easily. The Gaiters fired back with several three pointers that seemed to put things out of reach for the Axemen.
In the game's final seconds, the Axemen tried desperately to force an extra frame, but Bishop's put Acadia in a tough position and eventually ran the clock down. The final score of the game was 76-72.
The Axemen only shot 4 for 22 from distant arc - an area of the game that the Gaiters were able to take the upper hand in. Kevin Davis (Baltimore, Md.) had five of the Gaiter's 12 threes, totalled 22 points, and was named the Subway Player of the Game.
The Axemen will shake off the loss and play the X-Men tomorrow night.
Bishop's University will test themselves on Saturday with a tough game against Carleton.
