Axemen top X-men and Carleton keeps rolling with win over Gaiters

Stu Aberdeen Tournament – Sat. Sept. 29 - Game 3: Carleton 107 vs Bishop's 66

Carleton University saw their second win of the tournament come against the Bishop's Gaiters, as the Ravens closed out the Gaiters 107-66.

The first quarter belonged to Carleton, as they opened with a 22-0 run and finished the quarter up 29-7. Carleton's TJ Lall (Cambridge, Ont.) put up nine points in the first 10 minutes.

The Gaiters found their stride in the second quarter, adding 20 to their 7 points, but Carleton had an equally impressive quarter, keeping Bishop's at a safe distance. Carleton closed out the half with a score of 56-27.

Both teams shot well from behind the arc in the first half, but it was the Ravens that were able to get it done all over the court. The majority of the Gaiters' first-half points came from their six threes.

The third quarter saw no change in the lead, with the Ravens keeping their pace and leading 86-50. Lall continued to lead the game in points, with 13 after the third. He would add 2 more in the fourth.

Carleton locked the game up in the fourth quarter, where multiple Ravens found the scoresheet. A total of 7 Carleton Ravens had points in the double digits on the night.

To go along with their excellent shooting, Carleton played a tough defensive game aided by Mitch Wood (Guelph, Ont.), who picked up 6 rebounds, added 5 assists, and was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Raven's top scorer TJ Lall posted a team-high 15 points, while Aiden Wanholtz and Eddie Ekiyor both added 13 points.

On the losing end, Zion Vervroegen had 12 points and teammate Jordan Thornhill pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.

Bishop's University plays their last game on Sunday against the StFX X-Men at noon.

The 2-0 Ravens play Acadia on Sunday at 2 pm in the final game of the tournament.

Stu Aberdeen Tournament – Sat. Sept. 29 - Game 4: StFX 76 vs Acadia 91

The Acadia Axemen won their first game of the Stu Aberdeen Tournament 91-76 over the StFX X-Men in front of 612 fans.

In the first quarter, the X-Men were looking like the better team. They handled the ball for the majority of the quarter, shot 8 for 11, and took a 22-14 lead into the first break.

Momentum on the court suddenly shifted during the second quarter, which saw a change in the lead. The Axemen rallied on a few scoring runs that threw the X-Men off their game. Acadia had a 25-point quarter to bring the score to a 39-35 Axemen lead at half.

The energy the Axemen found in the second was carried over to the third quarter, where they continued to expand on their lead. Acadia was able to convert off many St. FX turnovers that proved to be fatal for the X-Men.

Midway through the third quarter, X-Men Nicholas McKee (Newmarket, Ont.) appeared to hurt his right leg after an Acadia layup. He did not return to play.

Later in the third, Thomas Legallais (Cornwall, Ont.) of the X-Men made a nifty pass to teammate Azaro Roker (Nassau, Bahamas) who threw down a massive dunk, bringing even the home fans to their feet.

After brushing off their subpar first quarter, Acadia outplayed their opponents for the remainder of the game and took the win 91-76. Ben Miller (Winnipeg, Man.) had 18 points to help the Axemen stay on top for the majority of the game and was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Acadia had 20 points off of turnovers and delivered 11 second-chance points and 28 points from the bench. Forest Mahoney led the Axemen with eight rebounds while Trevon Grant and Junior Maoku-Matia both added 14 points to Miller's 18.

Tristan Ross led the X-men with 17 points and Azaro Roker posted a game-high 15 rebounds and added 16 points.

The X-Men fall to 0-2 in the tournament play and take on Bishop's Sunday at 12.

Acadia will look for their second win of the tournament against the Ravens Sunday afternoon.
