Axemen conclude exhibition season with win over Laurentian

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Alex Muise (Halifax, N.S.) poured on 19 points with high efficiency and Thomas MacDonald (Rothesay, N.B.) added 14 points as well as 4 rebounds as the Acadia Axemen defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 80 - 72 at Stu Aberdeen Court.

It was a back-and-forth game for the first three quarters with 7 ties and 6 lead changes in the game — the Voyageurs led by 2 in the first half.

Acadia controlled the boards throughout the game, outrebounding Laurentian 28 - 20 with 9 offensive rebounds leading to 9 second-chance points. 6 Laurentian turnovers allowed Acadia opportunities in transition as the Axemen scored 9 points off of those turnovers.

The Axemen proved to be the deeper team with a 29 – 15 advantage scoring off the bench.

Scoring for the Voyageurs, Gaëtan Chamand (Saint-Pierre, REU) put up 29 points in the loss on 54.5% shooting.

Also scoring in double digits for Laurentian, Cedric Mbiaba (Ottawa, ONT.) scored 12 points and Salim Coulibaly (Ivory Coast) went a perfect 5 – 5 from the floor for 11 points.

The Axemen finish their preseason with a 4 – 5 record and the Laurentian Voyageurs fall to 2 – 5 in their final preseason event.

Acadia opens the regular season on Wednesday at STFX and then returns home for a season home opener on Saturday against the X-Men again.
