Acadia recognized with three basketball award winners

HALIFAX – Acadia received three awards with the announcement of the AUS basketball awards on Thursday afternoon.

From the Axewomen program, Elizabeth Iseyemi (Dartmouth, NS) was named a first team all-star, while Samantha Russell (Dartmouth, NS) was named to the second team.

For Iseyemi, this is her third all-star recognition, being named a second team all-star in the previous two seasons. Russell receives her first all-star nod, having been named to the 2021-22 all-rookie team.

This season Iseyemi led the conference in points per game with 22.0 and field goal percentage at 50.1 per cent. She was second in rebounds and rebounds per game with 226 and 11.3 respectively, while also being third in steals with 37. Her points per game put her second in the country, while she finished fourth in the country in rebounds per game.

Russell was second on the Axewomen in scoring with 14.5 points per game, good enough for ninth in the conference. She was third in the AUS in defensive rebounds with 133 and sixth in rebounds per game with 8.5.

From the Axemen program, Glen Cox (Scotsburn, NS) was named a first team all-star as the lone award winner from Acadia.

He led the AUS in scoring with 23.8 points per game and in free throws with 148. His field goal percentage was third in the conference at 52.2 per cent. Nationally he finished second in scoring, trailing only Victoria’s Diego Maffia who finished with 26.7 points per game.

This weekend in Halifax the Axewomen face the Memorial Sea-Hawks in their AUS quarter-final at 6:30 p.m. at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
