Top ranked Axemen end weekend with 8-2 over Moncton

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen wrapped up the opening weekend of 2016 with a 8-2 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus and extend their winning streak to 8 games.

The Axemen pulled out to a 4-0 lead after one period.  Video Recap>

First year defenseman Brett Cote (Oakbank, Man.) opened the scoring in the first period on a shot from the near boards that caught the top corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Just over eight minutes later Kyle Farrell (Howie Centre, N.S.) scored his first of two goals on a rebound from a Boston Leier (Saskatoon, Sask) shot from the top of the faceoff circle that was deflected by Sam Fioretti (Calgary, Alta.).

The Axemen pushed the lead to 3-0, when Travis Randell (Twillingate, Nfld.) scored his first of a two goal performance after a centering pass from Stephen Woodworth (Middleton, N.S.) gave Randell a shot from the slot that caught the top shelf.

Randell repeated with Acadia's fourth and final goal of the opening period. Randell scored on a difficult angle after he pulled in a Michael Clarke (Halifax, N.S.) backhanded rebound to give Acadia a 4-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The Aigles Bleus pulled starting netminder Brandon Thibeau (Riverview, N.B.) for replacement Adrien LeMay (Moncton, N.B.) at the start of the second period. LeMay stopped the bleeding in the second period allowing only one goal.

Tyler Ferry (Richmond Hill, Ont.) was credited the only goal of the second frame. A deflected centering shot by Mike Cazolla (Guelph, Ont.) gave Ferry a high slot open lane to his first goal of the regular season.

Brett Thompson (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) opened up the third period with his tenth goal of the season on a wrist shot at the bottom of the faceoff circle on a feed from teammate Geoff Schemitsch (Thornhill, Ont.).

Boston Leier setup the Axemen's seventh goal of the night on a great pass to Kyle Farrell that led to his second goal of the evening.

Moncton broke the goose egg just under five minutes into the final frame when Alex Saulnier (Cap-Pele, N.B.) hammered home a loose puck off of a Jean-Francois Plante's (Sherbrooke, Que.)feed from the corner.

Second year forward Zachery Franko (Winnipeg, Man.) capped the Axemen's eight goal game with tapped in pass from Geoff Schemitsch. In the closing minutes of the game, Moncton's Danny Chiasson (Lameque, N.B.) tapped in a loose puck that trickled past Brandon Glover (Victoria, B.C.) to end the scoring at 8-2.

Kyle Farrell was named the Subway First Star of the Game for his two goal effort while teammate Travis Randell was named the third star. Moncton's Danny Chiasson was awarded the second star of the game.

Outshooting Moncton 41-33, the CIS top ranked Axemen improve to 14-2-1, while Moncton drops to 7-8-2. Acadia will take on St. Thomas and Moncton on the road in New Brunswick next weekend. The Axemen lead the regular season four game series against Moncton 3-0.
