Axemen post 3-1 win at SMU and improve to 2-0

HALIFAX, NS —The Saint Mary's Huskies dropped a 3-1 decision to Acadia in their 2018 home-opener Sunday afternoon at Huskies Stadium in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer action.

Forward Alex Black (Halifax, NS) opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a fortitudinous bounce and burst of speed, beat two Acadia defenders en route to the ball for his first goal of the year with an assist from goalie Christian Oxner (Halifax, NS).

Acadia answered back in the 38th minute when Tylor Connolly's (Quispamsis, NB) corner-kick found a leaping Ryan Parris (Pembroke, Bermuda) who deposited the equalizer header in the back of the net.

Both teams were even 1-1 at half.

The Axemen wasted no time taking the lead as their pressure forced a foul in SMU's box and were awarded a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Oxner was beaten with a shot up top just under the goal bar by Coleman Hooper (New Minas, NS) for his second goal of the year.

Oxner had a miscue in the 62nd minute and his turnover led to Zane Brennan's (Fredericton, NB) goal and Acadia held onto to the 3-1 victory.

Acadia improves to 2-0 on the year while SMU falls to 0-1-1.

Next up, StFX (2-0) visit SMU on Saturday, September 15th while Acadia hosts  Moncton on Friday, September 14 at 7:15 p.m.

Parris was named Subway Player of the Game for Acadia.
