Axemen soccer welcomes Mellema as first commit for 2024

WOLFVILLE – Blaise Mellema is the first member of the Axemen soccer recruitment class for 2024.

A 5’10 midfielder/winger, he joins via Suburban FC.

“Blaise is exactly the type of student-athlete we’re looking to bring to Acadia as we build on the significant progress of last season,” said head coach Amit Batra. “He’s a dynamic and versatile attacker who likes to take players on and is hungry for goals. Blaise has always been dedicated to improving his own game while maintaining high marks in school. We think he brings the total package is a great addition to our attacking line.”

Most recently with Suburban FC, he played in the Nova Scotia Soccer League. During that time he was also given opportunities a guest player to join BC Surf in April 2023 to attend the prestigious Dallas Cup where he had the experience of playing against the Tigres U17 Academy team.

In October, at the end of his U17 season, Mellema was invited by coach Oliver Hewish to join the Suburban FC senior men’s team to compete in the national championships in Halifax.

“His ball striking ability and his creativity in front of goal adds some fire to any team’s attack,” said Hewish. “Blaise is a great person and will have an impact off the pitch as well.”

Prior to this, while with the Whitecaps Academy, he attended the 2022 Whitecap combine where he was his team’s top scorer at the event. He also played with UDFC from 2014-22.

“I am very excited to join the Acadia Axemen! I look forward to developing as a player and contributing to the team.”

Mellema will be working towards a business degree while attending Acadia.
