Acadia swimming open season at home at Scholz meet

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Acadia swimming began their  season this past weekend while hosting the 8th annual Jack Scholtz Invitational. A total of five teams took part in this first AUS swim meet. UNB, Mount A, PEI, Dalhousie plus the host Acadia Axemen.

The Axemen began with a bang with freshman, Brett Liem showing why he was a highly  touted recruit and showed his incredible talent in his first event. Brett managed to swim faster than he ever had in the 50 Freestyle and shattered the varsity record and became the first CIS qualifier for the season. He went on to win the 50 fly, 3rd in the 100 breast and a 3rd in the 200IM. All seasonal best times.

From that point on the team was highly motivated and everyone dug deep to show the conference that we were here to compete. Another freshman, Ben Henger also impressed with 2 top three performances. Veterans such as Alison MacEachern, Hannah Doiron, Adam Deutsch and Brendan Viber all showed good early season form.  Coach MacDonald was very impressed how both freshmen and veterans came together and competed hard.  Besides Brett some of the freshmen to look out for this season are, Chris Johnson ( Breast stroke ), Kevin Matheson ( free/fly), Aileen Feschuk ( breast/free) and Nicole Windsor ( Fly/free).

At the end of the weekend the Axemen finished a solid second in the mens competition and the womens a narrow 4th place finish (only .5 points behind third place ). Overall if you combine men's and women the team placed 2nd overall behind perennial favorites the Dalhousie Tigers.

The Axemen and Axewomen now prepare for the UNB Amby Legere Invitational Meet October  29-30.
