Axemen and Axewomen sit second after DAY 1

SAINT JOHN, NB - The Dalhousie Tigers won 10 of the 12 events on the first day of competition at the 2018 Subway Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, in Saint John. 

The Tigers swam to victory in the women's 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke, women's 100-metre butterfly, 400-metre individual medley, 400-metre freestyle relay, as well as the men's 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke, 100-metre butterfly, 400-metre individual medley and 400-metre freestyle relay. 

"I feel like we're in a good place. Hopefully we can keep it up," said Tigers head coach Lance Cansdale. "Hats off to Acadia, they're very competitive and it's not just in the men. In the women's side, everybody's swimming well."  

In the women's 400-metre individual medley, Tigers swimmers swept all three podium positions. 

Memorial's Jasmine Foran(Bathurst, NB) won the women's 100-metre breaststroke, while Acadia's Adam Deutsch(Kingston, NS) won the men's 100-metre breaststroke. 

Deutsch also won two silver medals, finishing second in the 400-metre individual medley and as part of the 400-metre freestyle relay team. 

"It feels pretty good. It's been a long ride to get here, I'm just glad to get it done," said Deutsch. "I was hoping this would be the result. I'd have liked more in the relay, that would've been nice, but it's right where I wanted to be." 

Mount Allison's Geriant Berger(Bedford, NS) earned silver and bronze medals in the men's 200-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke, respectively. 

The host UNB Varsity Reds picked up a pair of medals. Jennifer Moore(Hamilton, ON) took the bronze in the women's 200-metre freestyle, beating the fourth place finisher by just four-tenths of a second. Noah Horwood(Fredericton, NB) took second in the men's 100-metre breaststroke, earning silver. 

"Noah, I had high expectations, because he's been performing top three all year, but that was probably Jen's first top three finish all season and she did it here," said Varsity Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand. "It was a great swim. That was her life-time best by three seconds." 

Competition resumes Saturday. 

Preliminary heats go at 10:00am, while Day Two finals begin at 6:00pm.
