Collins and Rooney qualify for Olympic trials on opening day of U SPORTS swimming championships

MONTREAL – Ella Collins finished seventh in the A final of the women’s 100m breaststoke event with a time of 1:12.47 to lead Acadia swimming results on the opening day of the 2024 U SPORTS swimming championships hosted by McGill University.

Collins qualified for the A final with the eighth best time in the prelims of 1:09.78. Her finals time has also qualifier her for the Olympic trials by topping the time standard.

Also in Thursday night’s finals, Sophie Rooney won the C final in the women’s 50m backstroke with a time of 30.35 to finish 17th in the country, which also has earned her a spot at the Olympic trials. She qualified for the C final with a time of 29.15.

To wrap up Acadia action in the finals for the night was the 4x100m Freestyle team of Nate Thompson, Gordon Shortt, Lucas Mazier and Marcus Vaillancourt. In a timed final, they finished 12th with a time of 3:34.62.

Earlier in the day, Shortt and Vaillancourt also competed in their respective individual events. Vaillancourt missed the finals of the men’s 100m butterfly, finishing in 39th place with a time of 57.03

Shortt finished 33rd in prelims with a time of 1:03.23 in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
