V-Reds escape with 84-82 win over Acadia

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The second place UNB Varsity Reds secured a close 84-82 win over the host Acadia Axewomen in a nail-biting match on Saturday night that extended into overtime.

UNB outran to Axewomen to take the lead in the first half of the game.  Fourth year guard and Subway Player of the Game, Laura Kaye (Fredericton, N.B.), and point guard Grace Wade (Moncton, N.B.), led the Varsity Reds in points in the first half, finishing with 23 and 14 points each respectively.

Acadia bounced back in the last two minutes of the third period to narrow the gap in points. Efforts from fourth year players Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) Alexandra Berry (Yarmouth, N.S.), and Katie Ross (Halifax, N.S.) helped to bring the score to a 57-55 UNB lead at the end of the third quarter.

Acadia continued to chip away at the UNB lead in the final quarter pulling ahead 69-65 with three minutes remaining in regulation time. Acadia led by one point in the closing minute of the period, and a foul on UNB player Nicole LaFleur (Fredericton, N.B.) tied the score 71-71 after LaFleur missed the last of two free throws.

After five minutes of overtime play, including standout plays from Acadia's Paloma Anderson, and a three-point shot by Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.), Acadia led by two points with 18 seconds remaining on the clock.

A well-executed three-point shot from Lafleur in the final ten seconds of over time along with with a game ending free throw, resulted in the 84-82 win for the Varsity Reds.

Anderson posted a game high 32 points, while teammate Katie Ross, fresh off of soccer play last weekend, netted 19 points. Kaye finished the game with a team high 24 points and LaFleur added 17.

Acadia drops to a 1-5 record, while the Varsity Reds hold onto second place in the AUS standings with a 5-1 record. The Axewomen host Dalhousie this coming Thursday night and the V-Reds take on Dalhousie on Saturday night in Fredericton.
