WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen defeated the StFX X-Women by a score of 94-76 on Minor Basketball Night in front of a crowd just under 1000.
The Axewomen fell behind during the first few minutes of the game. Coach Len Harvey saw the opportunity to call for a time-out and adjust his team's play before the game got out of hand.
Three-point shots were not working well for the Axewomen and Harvey advised his players to take the open lanes to the basket instead.
Within a few plays, the Axewomen were on their way to a 10-point run that would close out the first quarter 24-17 Acadia.
The Axewomen found their groove with quick passes and easy layups during the second quarter before getting comfortable enough to go for longer shots.
Lanae Adams (Lawrenceville, GA) shot 4/6 from three over the game, totaled 19 points, handled 8 rebounds, and added 2 assists. Her all-around outstanding stats had her recognized as Acadia's Subway Player of the Game.
Acadia ended the first half up 43-32, shooting 15 for 30 from the field and making 9 of 10 of their free throws.
The X-Women started to wear down by the third quarter and did not challenge Acadia for the lead for the remainder of the game.
It was not until the fourth quarter that the X-Women saw points come off the bench. The X-Women only had five points not from their starters, showing their lack of depth. The Axewomen took advantage of this weakness and kept a fresh line-up on the court all game.
Adams pointed out after the game that the Axewomen score by committee and that working on their defense will be a priority during the break.
"Our team is very versatile. Pretty much everybody down the line of the bench can score. Offense is not a big thing, we definitely have to work on our defense and stay under control", said Adams in a post-game interview.
Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, N.S.) of the X-Women had a team-high 17 points and made 4 of her 14 attempted three-point shots. McCarron was named her team's Subway Player of the Game.
The final score of the game favoured the Axewomen 94-76, who improve to 5-2 on the season. StFX is still searching for their first win of the regular season and will remain winless into the Holiday Break.
The Axewomen have not exhibition games planned over the Holiday Break and are back on our court January 5th against Dalhousie at Acadia.
The X-Women do not play again until December 30th and 31st when they partake in the MSVU Dyrick McDermott Invitational tournament.
