WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Memorial Seahawks won Saturday afternoon's first of two games against Acadia in the final seconds, with a final score of 86-83.
The game started fairly close, with both teams putting up points quickly. Memorial gained a slight advantage in the first quarter, but the Axewomen trailed behind them.
At times in the second quarter, Acadia fell back by as much as 10 points, the Axewomen rallied towards the end of the half and tied the game at 42-42 before the buzzer.
The Axewomen relied heavily on Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, N.S.) and Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.), who scored the majority of Acadia's points. The two played very well together, grabbing rebounds and setting up each other under the basket.
Veinot would finish with the game's only double-double, putting up 25-10-5 and earning her the Subway Player of the Game Award.
McDonald lead all players going into the last quarter with 24 points and completed the game with an astounding 32 points.
Tied at 82-82 with 25 seconds remaining in the game, Axewoman Lanae Adams (Lawrenceville, Georgia) missed the first of two free throws to give the Axewomen an 83-82 edge.
In a desperate attempt to shut the Seahawk's offense down, Acadia drew a foul and gave Sydney Stewart (London, ON) two shots with 10 seconds left, both of which she hit. The Axewomen were not able to convert on their final opportunity leading to two more Sea-Hawk foul shots to end the game.
Stewart lead the Seahawks in points, finishing with 20 and the game-winner. Stewart was named her team's Subway Player of the Game.
The final score of the game was 86-83 for Memorial University.
The Seahawks did not waste any of their opportunities from 3, as they shot nine of 21 attempts (42.9%).
Memorial was able to generate 30 points off their bench, while Acadia only had 10. Though Acadia's star players had excellent performances, their lack of depth ended up hurting them.
Both teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
