Nunes-Sabean commits to Axewomen basketball for 2024 season

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axewomen are excited to announce the signing of Emily Nunes-Sabean, the first member of their 2024-25 recruitment class.

A 6’0 forward, Nunes-Sabean most recently played for Lincoln Prep in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA).

“We’re very excited to add Emily to our team for next season. She was a high priority for our recruitment for the last couple of years, and her growth both at Armbrae and at Lincoln Prep cemented our commitment to getting her here in an Axewomen jersey,” said head coach Len Harvey. “Emily is mobile and long, with a great feel for the game. She makes an impact on both ends of the floor, is a solid three level scorer and we feel she’s still only scratching the surface of her potential. We’re really excited Emily chose Acadia!”

Prior to playing a season for Lincoln Prep, the Halifax native played two seasons with Armbrae Academy from 2021-23 where she played with current Axewoman Iris Leuschner. Nunes-Sabean was named a team MVP both seasons.

On top of playing for Armbrae, she was also a member of the Basketball Nova Scotia U17 team in 2022 and 2023.

“When choosing a university, I was looking for an institution with a solid academic tradition, a strong sense of community and a highly-respected basketball programme. Acadia had everything I was looking for in terms of my development as a student, athlete and community member,” said Nunes-Sabean. “To top it all off, the natural beauty of Wolfville and the surrounding valley holds a special place in my heart. Having watched the Acadia women's basketball team since I was a young player, I am very excited for the opportunity to work with many of the players who I have looked up to.

“I would like to thank all of my coaches whose knowledge, dedication and many hours on the court have helped me get to where I am today. I would also like to thank coach Len for giving me this opportunity. Lastly, thank you to my family and friends who have pushed me to be the best version of myself and supported me throughout the years. Looking very forward to training and competing with my fellow Axewomen.”
