Mowat brings provincial team experience to Axewomen

WOLFVILLE – The Axewomen continue to grow their 2024 recruitment class with the commitment of Moncton’s Olivia Mowat.

The 5’10 guard comes to Acadia from Bernice MacNaughton High School (BMHS), while also bringing some key provincial team experience to the Axewomen.

“We were immediately drawn to Mo after seeing her in Montreal this past summer while recruiting. She was being coached by former Axewoman Allie Berry who told us she had the type of attitude we were looking for,” said head coach Len Harvey. “Needless to say, she didn’t disappoint. She’s rugged, tough, and a natural leader who brings a positive attitude to the spaces she is in. She’s a tough defender, long, with an ability to do a multitude of things on the court. With her work ethic and drive to succeed, we’re really excited about her choosing to come to Acadia.”

With BMHS she averaged 20 points per game in her senior year as team captain, while also being selected as an NBIAA AAA northeast all-star. She was also a tournament all-star at the Hoop Classic and St. Mach’s tournaments.

In her prior two seasons with BMHS she was team captain and NBIAA AAA all-star in her Grade 11 year, while also being named a Hoop Classic all-star in 2022 and 2023.

“I chose Acadia for both its academics and athletics, in addition to the strong community support. Since the first time visiting the university, I knew right away that Acadia is where I belong,” said Mowat. “Wolfville is a very tight-knit community in the valley where everyone supports and cheers each other on; no matter the sport or gender, which is one of the things I admire about the university and community. The school spirit at Acadia is outstanding and has fans like nowhere else. I felt very welcomed by my teammates, coaches and professors. The team culture is very positive, encouraging, uplifting with an intense work ethic and attitude, which I highly value. I look forward to being developed as an individual both on and off the court.”

In 2022 and 2023 she was selected for Basketball New Brunswick’s (BNB) U17 team, receiving praise from head coach Bram Russell for her work ethic and hustle both years.

Other accolades included winning the BNB division 1 championship in 2019 to secure a spot in the Junior NBA in Quebec and winning the U14 middle school championship, which was the first in decades for a team from Greater Moncton.

“Acadia exceeds all my expectations. I cannot wait for Acadia University to be my new home this fall and to represent my new school in front of the unbelievable fans as an Axewomen.”

Mowat will be working towards a kinesiology degree while attending Acadia.
