Axewomen return to win column with win over Huskies

HALIFAX – The Acadia Axewomen defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 41-7 on Saturday afternoon at Huskies Stadium in Halifax.

The Axewomen offence clicked from the first drive of the game, as prop Ebehiremen Otoikhine (Calgary, AB) punched it in for a try, with scrumhalf Lucinda Breau (Moncton, NB) kicking the conversion to make it 7-0 just one minute into the action.

Just under two minutes later, the Huskies equalized, as centre Xenia Theoharopoulos (Halifax, NS), intercepted a pass in the Axewomen zone and brought it in for the try, with centre Lauren Maye (Lower Sackville, NS) hitting the conversion to tie the match at 7-7.

Several minutes later, Acadia would take a lead on a try from fullback Juliette Matsukubo (Ottawa, ON), and wouldn't look back.

The Axewomen finished the match by scoring 34 unanswered points, on tries from six different players – Otoikhine, Matsukubo, Mychael Paris (Halifax, NS), Katya Dondi (Caledon, ON), Kenzie Cecchetto (Newport, NS), Chloe Buckingham (Moncton, NB) and Kaitlyn Landry (Riverview, NB), with Sarah Gunn (Scotsburn, NS), adding two conversions to round out the scoring.

The Axewomen would win by a final score of 40-7, with prop Ebehiremen Otoikhine being named Player of the Game for Acadia, while Huskies centre Lauren Maye was named Player of the Game for Saint Mary's.

The Axewomen win improves their record to 1-2 on the season. They'll be back on the road next weekend, taking on the St. FX X-Women (3-0) on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
