Laval tops Acadia to advance to consolation final

The top-seeded Laval Rouge et Or secured a convincing 42-7 victory over the Acadia Axewomen in the 2024 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship consolation semifinal.

Laval capitalized on early Acadia turnovers, with Rosalie Charbonneau scoring the first try on the left wing in the 11th minute, converted by Adele Samson for a 7-0 lead. Despite an Acadia push led by Juliette Matsukubo's 50-metre intercept, a penalty ended their scoring opportunity.

Laval continued to pressure, extending their lead before halftime as Alice Théberge completed a hard-fought drive. Samson's conversion made it 14-0 going into the break.

The Rouge et Or came out strong in the second half, with Camille Arvin-Berod, Corinne Fréchette, and Mia Fortin each scoring tries within the first 20 minutes, with Samson remaining perfect on conversions to stretch the lead to 35-0. Léa Ouellette added a try in the 56th minute, and Samson's conversion pushed the margin to 42-0. Acadia found some late momentum, with Brielynn Murrant scoring their lone try in the 62nd minute, followed by a successful conversion from Sara Grant, ending the match at 42-7.

The Rouge et Or advance to Sunday's fifth-place game, where they will play the Guelph Gryphons at 11 a.m. AT. The Axewomen conclude their season with a seventh-place finish.
