Axewomen settle with third place after weekend at MUN

Friday: Sea-Hawks and Axewomen battle to 3-3 draw

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks and Acadia Axewomen battle to a 3-3 tie in AUS women's soccer action.

The Sea-Hawks and Axewomen both came out ready to play as each team looks to secure a top two seed in the AUS standings in the final weekend of play.  It would be Acadia who would strike first with a marker from Alexandra Scovil in the 24th minute.

Memorial would strike back in the 36th minute on a strike from Hannah Rivkin from just outside the box.  Both teams would trade scoring chances to close out the half, but neither team could find the back of the net.

The second half was fast-paced and once again both teams had opportunities to score, but the goalkeepers were up to the challenge.  Taylor Doyle finished with 9 saves for the Sea-Hawks, while Emma Connell made 6 saves for the vistors.

Memorial kept pushing and took a 2-1 lead on a goal from rookie Holly O'Neill.  The Sea-Hawks would strike again moments later on a penalty kick from Hannah Rivkin.

It looks as if the Sea-Hawks would cruise to victory, until Acadia received a goal from Michelle Pryde in the 79th minute to put the Axewomen right back in it.  Acadia would continue to push for the equalizer and it would come in the 89th minute on a corner kick from Katie Ross that found Jenna Howell in the box.

The draw keeps Memorial three points up on the Axewomen with the rematch happening tomorrow at 1:00pm at King George V Soccer Pitch.  The Sea-Hawks need a win or a tie to secure a top two finish and receive a first round playoff bye.

Teri Murphy was the Subway Player of the Game.

Saturday: Sea-Hawks edge Axewomen to finish 2nd in AUS

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks have clinched the 2nd overall seed in the AUS after a 1-0 victory over the Acadia Axewomen in St. John's, NL.

Going in to today's match the Sea-Hawks and Axewomen were separated by just three points in the standings.  Memorial needed a win or tie to secure the 2nd overall seed in the AUS.  Acadia needed a win to pass the Sea-Hawks in the standings.

Memorial was able to strike first, when Hannah Rivkin found Spencer Wilkins in the 13th minute to give the Sea-Hawks a 1-0 advantage.  Memorial continued to stay in the offensive end for the majority of the first half and outshot the Axewomen by an 8-3 advantage.  The Sea-Hawks were unable to find the back of the net again and the halftime score was 1-0 for the home side.

Acadia pushed hard the entire second half looking for the equalizer, outshooting Memorial 9-1.  However, Memorial keeper Taylor Doyle was up to the challenge and was able to record the clean sheet.

With the win the Sea-Hawks now advance to the semifinal of the AUS Women's Soccer Championship this Friday in Sydney, NS.  Acadia will face the Dalhousie Tigers on Thursday evening in the quarterfinal.

Hannah Rivkin was the Subway Player of the Game.
