Soccer Axewomen advance to SF versus Memorial

Sydney, NS – The 2016 Subway AUS Women's Championship got underway at CBU Field Thursday night with No. 3 seeded Acadia Axewomen taking on No. 6 Dalhousie. The 1st quarterfinal match was a defensive battle with both teams playing tight in the first half.

The team loosened up in the second half and traded goals. Dalhousie broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a goal mouth scramble off a corner kick. Jensen Hudder (White's Lake, N.S.) poked the ball through the crowd for the Tigers.

The lead did not last long as Acadia tied the game in the 71th minute with a similar scramble off a corner kick. Katie Ross (Bedford, N.S.) put the corner kick into the box and Allie Scovil (Hubley, N.S.) put the ball in the back of the net. The team failed to score beyond the 1-1 deadlock in regulation time and forcing the game into extra-time.

Seven minutes into extra-time, AUS All-Star Candace Conrad (Dartmouth, N.S.) scored the go ahead goal assisted again by Katie Ross. The Axewomen played solid defense the remaining overtime play and limited the Tigers attack to earn the victory. Katie Ross was named the Subway Player of the Game for her two assists. Dalhousie's Keeper Sam Corcoran (Ottawa, Ont.) , who earned the Subway Player of the Game for the Tigers, made several key saves to keep the underdog Tigers in the game.

With the victory, Acadia now faces No. 2 seed Memorial University in the second semi-final on Friday at 7.30pm at CBU Field. The Axewomen played their final two regular season against the Sea-Hawks and came away with a tie and a loss.
