Axewomen Take Home Opener 4-0 Over Mount Allison

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen shutout the Mount Allison Mounties in a 4-0 victory in their home opener Friday.

Both teams came out showing strong defence, but it was Acadia who found the scoreboard first off a well-timed header from Alexandra Scovil (Hubley, N.S.) sent from a corner kick by Rachelle Aucoin (Cheticamp, N.S.).

After their first goal, the Axewomen put offensive pressure on their opponents and kept the ball in the Mounties' end, registering 8 of their 19 shots in the first half.

Scovil would add another goal late in the 45th minute of the half to put the Axewomen up 2-0 at half-time.

Acadia forward Jenna Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.) picked up her second assist of the game when teammate Annika Monroe (Halifax, N.S.) sent her cross-crease pass into the net 59 minutes into the match.

Rookie midfielder Jessica Hunt (Langley, B.C.) scored in her debut game to put Acadia at a comfortable 4-0 lead. The Axewomen managed to hold off Mount Allison for the remainder of the game, which gave goalkeeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, Ont.) a shutout in her first appearance this season.

Mounties' goalkeeper Sophie Austin (Kanata, Ont.) made an impressive 15 saves on an Acadia offense that did not let up all game.

For her two-goal performance, Scovil was named the Subway Player of the Game, but credited her teammates for the victory. "It was a really big team effort. Everyone was able to get in off the bench. We just have to keep pushing ourselves as a team and focus on the things we need to improve on, celebrate this win until midnight, and then start again."

The Axewomen look to keep their momentum going in a road game against Saint Mary's University on Sunday, when the Mounties will host Dalhousie for their home opener.
