Axewomen remain undefeated while Axemen suffer first loss

This past weekend in Acadia soccer, the U SPORTS No. 6 ranked Acadia Axewomen remain undefeated after wins in Fredericton and Sackville, while the Axemen split the weekend road trip to New Brunswick with their first loss of the season against UNB and a win versus Mount Allison.

The Axewomen surrendered their first goal of the season, but hung on to beat the UNB Reds 2-1 on Saturday.

Allie Scovil scored her fifth goal of the season in the 36th minute and it stood as the winner, as Acadia picked up their fifth consecutive win in five games.

Julea Walsh opened the scoring, in the 6th minute, converting a kick from the corner.

Scovil's goal put the Axewomen up 2-0, but the Reds raced right down the turf and countered one minute later by Jelisa Joncas.

UNB pressed late, but Acadia's one goal lead stood. Axewomen keeper Sarah Charnock was named the Subway Player of the Game.

In their second and final game of the weekend, the Axewomen hand the Mount Allison Mounties their fifth loss of the 2018-19 season. The Axewomen are still undefeated, with 19 goals so far this season, and only one goal against.

Axewomen Jenna Boudreau had a fantastic play just after the 20-minute mark, scoring the first goal of the game at 21:18 and quickly scoring again just a minute later at 22:25.

In the 85th minute Julea Walsh scores again for the Axewomen, making the score 3-0 Acadia.

The Subway Player of the Game was awarded to senior Axewomen Jenna Boudreau for her outstanding play.

"It's hard for any team in a really competitive league to maintain this type of streak. The team keeps clicking, we have good chemistry, and players play for each other and that's a hallmark of our program over the years. This is our current group of players building on the success of the past and making this season their own," noted head coach Amit Batra after the weekend games in New Brunswicl.

The Axewomen return to action this Sunday in Antigonish against the StFX X-Women at 1:00 p.m. Acadia hosts UNB on Friday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m.
