Capers hand Axewomen their only loss of the season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Cape Breton Capers gave the Acadia Axewomen their first loss of the season 2-0 in each team's last match of the season.

Both the Capers and the Axewomen came into this game with impressive records and made for a very close match. The first half was scoreless, with the shots on goal favouring the Capers 4-3.

Acadia Axemen Jaqueline Stevens (Kentville, N.S.) played outstanding defense throughout the game and kept Acadia within reach. Her performance earned her the Subway Player of the Game award.

Moments into the second half, Caper Madison Goodliffe (Mississauga, Ont.) took a corner that found teammate Erin Freeman (Halifax, N.S.) in tight. Her shot made it through the crowd and gave Cape Breton a 1-0 lead.

Freeman was named her team's Subway Player of the Game for her game-winning goal.

The Axewomen pressed hard throughout the remainder of the game but struggled to score for the first time all season.

The Capers clinched the game with a late goal in the 89th minute by Ciera Disipio (Ottawa, Ont.).

Rachel Yerxa (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded the shutout for her team with 5 saves.

Both teams have qualified for the playoffs with the Capers taking sole possession of first place with 10-1-1 record while the Axewomen drop to 10-1-1. The win tonight breaks the tie between both teams. Both team will have a first round bye as the Capers host the AUS Championship next weekend in Sydney, N.S.
