SYDNEY, N.S. - The fourth-seeded StFX X-Women have advanced to the championship final after topping the U SPORTS no. 8-ranked and second-seeded Acadia Axewomen 1-0 with a penalty kick in the 90th minute.
Acadia keeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, Ont.)— winner of the 2018 AUS student athlete community service award and a second team all-star—made five saves in the first half, while second-year StFX keeper Emma Kuzmyk (Cookstown, Ont.) made three.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half.
Charnock made another save in the second half, while Kuzmyk made two. Both teams remained scoreless until the 90th minute.
An Acadia foul drew a StFX penalty kick taken by AUS first team all-star Kelsey Ellis (Ottawa, Ont.). She made no mistake, bringing the score to 1-0.
With mere seconds remaining, the Axewomen were unable to even the score.
AUS first team all-star Mercy Myles (Accra, Ghana) was named Subway Player of the Game for the X-Women in the win.
Charnock earned player of the game nods for the Axewomen for her six saves in the loss.
StFX now advances to Sunday's AUS championship final where they will face the winner of today's second semifinal matchup between the top-seeded and host Cape Breton Capers and no. 6-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks.
The X-Women's last championship banner win came in 2016.
