Axewomen win first of three-match weekend vs Memorial

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen volleyball team picked up a 3-1 match win against the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks in the first of a three-match weekend against the Sea-Hawks.

All close games, the Axewomen and Sea-Hawks were neck and neck into the final stages of the opening set.

Tied at 19, two kills by Axewoman Lucy Glen-Carter and teammates Sarah Ross and Regan Herrington gave Acadia a 32-19 lead and eventual 25-21 win.

The second set finished in the same manner but not in favour of the hometown Axewomen. Tied at 21, the Sea-Hawks capitalized on kills by Jordan Hutchinson and Alison Poynter followed by a service ace by Hutchinson to grab a 25-23 win.

With the match tied at 1, the Axewomen won a comfortable third set 25-16 and closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth and final game.

Catherine Ducey was named the Sea-Hawks' Player of the Match with six kills and five digs. Sarah Dawe posted a Memorial high of 9 kills and 11 points.

Several Axewomen in double-digits with kills including a match-high 17 by first-year outside hitter Lucy Glen-Carter. Glen-Carter also had 16 digs. Libero Kailey Evans led the Axewomen with 30 digs.

Daniella Trodel, who was named the Subway Player of the Match for the Axewomen, had 15 kills, two solo blocks, and two service aces. Senior Sarah Ross posted 13 kills and added 16 digs in her defensive effort.

Acadia improves to 12-5 and Memorial drops to 8-10.

The Axewomen and Sea-Hawks hit the court tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. and conclude the three-match weekend on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
