Volleyball Axewomen take second match 3-0 vs MUN

WOLFVILLE, N.S. –  The Axewomen grabbed a three-straight set win against the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks in the second of a three-match weekend against the Sea-Hawks.

With five wins in a row and a 12-1 record since November 18, the Axewomen have a second place four-point lead over the trailing Saint Mary's Huskies. Acadia does have a game in-hand.

A kill by Hannah Helm tied the match at 12-12, but did settle for the tie and posted a six-point run on Daniella Trodel and Lauryn Renzella kills along with Renzella's two service aces.

Ahead 21-14, Acadia concluded the set with a 25-18 victory.

A back-and-forth second set had the Sea-Hawks ahead 19-15, but Acadia would work back to tie the set at 22-22 on a Hannah Helm kill. Acadia would squeeze out the second set victory on a Helm kill, two errors and Helm's service ace.

Demoralized by the second set loss, the Sea-Hawks seemed to settle for a match loss, falling 25-13 in the third and deciding game.

Subway Player of the Game, Lauryn Renzella, who logged 10 kills with a hitting efficiency of 0.261 and added two service aces, noted that the team had more confidence in today's match.

"We got the jitters out yesterday. We played more cohesive and started talking more which was definitely helpful in the pursuit of the ball. Even yesterday in the third and fourth set we were going after the ball a lot more. I felt today we were calmer and prepared to terminate the ball," said Renzella.

With the team on a 12-1 run since November, Renzella attributes the team's success so far to hard work by everyone.

"It comes from every single person on the court and on the bench. Michelle (Wood) has done a great job on the court and our girls have put in a great effort. Josh, our strength and conditioning coach has been working our butts off and I think everyone has been doing their individual job and leaving everything out on the court," commented Renzella.

Catherine Ducey led the Sea-Hawks with four kills. On the winning side, contributions came from Hannah Helm and  Sarah Ross with six kills each. Kailey Evans led the way on defense with 16 kills. Regan Herrington had a solid match with 22 sets.

Memorial and Acadia hit the court again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the final of three matches. This will be Memorial's final weekend of play, while the Axewomen head to Halifax to take on the first place Dalhousie Tigers on Friday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.

AUS Playoffs begin at Memorial on February 23rd.
