Axewomen sweep weekend matches vs Memorial

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A 3-1 match win completed a weekend 3 match Axewomen sweep of the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks.

Out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening set, the Axewomen maintained a comfortable margin for most of the game. The Sea-Hawks closed the Acadia lead to 12-8 on a Kierstin Fey kill, but Acadia pushed ahead 22-13 and captured the first set 25-19.

A 14-6 Acadia lead in the second game grew to 21-12 advantage, but Memorial worked back to a 24-21 deficit on a seven-point run spearheaded by four Acadia attack errors.

Winning the second set, 25-21, the Axewomen fell behind in the third set after a 7-7 tie.  Ahead 13-9, the Sea-Hawks maintained the lead for the entire third game, not allowing Acadia to close the gap to less than two points. Memorial prevailed in the third set by a score of 25-20.

The Axewomen pushed an early 6-5 advantage to a 15-10 score that would amount to a 25-19 fourth set victory and 3-1 match win.

Rookie outside hitter Lucy Glen-Carter led the Axewomen and match with 19 kills for 20 points.

Graduating senior libero Kailey Evans posted a match-high 27 digs and fellow graduate Sarah Ross added 13 kills and 16 points to the Axewomen's win. Lauryn Renzella had 12 kills for a 0.310 hitting efficiency and included a 16 dig defensive effort.

Memorial's Sarah Dawe had 14 kills with a 0.308 hitting efficiency and 23 digs. Teammate Kiersten Fey added 10 kills in the losing effort. Alison Poynter was named the Sea-Hawks Player of the Game with 37 assists.

The Sea-Hawks will now prepare for the hosting of the AUS Women's Volleyball Championship beginning March 2, while the Axewomen take on Dalhousie this coming Friday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Halifax.
