Axewomen open season with 3-0 sweep of Moncton

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen left off from where they were in the playoffs last season with a strong attacking game that swept the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-0.

In the Axewomen's home season opener, second-year outside hitter Taylor Collombin posted a game-high 8 kills for a 0.636 hitting percentage and was named as the Subway Player of the Game for her effort.

The Axewomen sweep included a 25-16 first set win that had Acadia in the lead for the early part of the game until Moncton tied the set at 13. Kills by Collombin and Lauryn Renzella, two Moncton attack errors and a service ace by Regan Herrington pushed the lead to 17-13 and the eventual win.

Acadia pulled out to a commanding 11-3 lead in the second set and maintained a lead no less than five points for the 25-15 second game win.

A much closer third and final set was tied at 11, but a kill by Collombin pushed the score to 13-12 Acadia and the Axewomen never looked back, completing the 3-0 match win with a 25-18 win.

Lucy Glen-Carter and Lauryn Renzella each posted 6 kills, while teammate Regan Herrington guided the Axewomen with 29 assists.

The defensive game for the Axewomen was shared by all with 31 digs being shared among many. Collombin led the Axewomen with 9 digs.

Pascale Doiron led the Aigles Bleues with six kills and four digs.

Moncton will have the week off and return to action on Friday at UNB, while the Axewomen take on defending AUS champions Dalhousie on Sunday, Oct. 28 in Halifax.
