AUS Tournament Day 2 Recap:
Moncton Aigles Bleus – 3 vs Memorial Sea-Hawks – 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-13)
The Moncton Aigles Bleus picked up their first match win of the AUS regular season with a convincing 3-0 win against Memorial at the AUS women's volleyball tournament hosted by Acadia.
The game was played on a secondary site of Horton High School and Moncton's win follows a loss to the league leading Dalhousie Tigers on Friday.
Pascale Doiron led the Aigles Bleues with a hitting percentage of 0.333 on 13 kills. Doiron added 13 digs and was named the Subway Player of the Match.
Moncton led for the majority of the opening set, allowing Memorial to tie the game at 11, but the Aigles Bleues moved onward to a 25-21 win.
Down early in the second game, Moncton tied the set at 11 and doubled Memorial's offensive output to lead 21-16 in the home stretch and eventual 25-20 win of the second game.
Doiron went to work in the final set with six kills in the closing of the game to lead the Aigles Bleues to a convincing 25-13 set and match win.
Kaitlyn Kuchinka and Belle de Vries combined for 17 kills with Kuchinka posting a team high of 10 for the Sea-Hawks. Kuchinka was named Memorial's Player of the Game. de Vries was kept busy defending with 11 digs.
The Sea-Hawks take on first place Dalhousie at 5:00 pm (AT) at Acadia, while the Aigles Bleues play host Acadia at 7:00 pm.
Dalhousie Tigers – 3 vs UNB Reds – 1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18)
The Dalhousie Tigers got a scare in the opening set with a 26-24 loss, but they remain undefeated this season by cruising to a 3-1 match win over the UNB Reds.
As last night in their opening set against Acadia, the Reds posted a close 26-24 win over the Tigers.
Pulling out to an early 8-0 lead in the second set, the Tigers continued putting offensive pressure on the defending Reds. Courtney Baker and Hannah Aldcorn combined for 5 kills to give Dalhousie a 22-8 lead and eventual 25-14 win.
UNB trailed early in the third set, but bounced back to a 10-13 deficit. The slim margin would not hold as the Tigers capitalized on attack errors and multiple kills from Julie Moore, Victoria Haworth and Courtney Baker and a 25-17 game victory.
The fourth and final set saw the Tigers pull out to a commanding 12-3 lead that would not be relinquished. Two consecutive kills by Julie Moore would wrap up the fourth set with a 25-18 set and 3-1 match Dalhousie win.
Courtney Baker took the honours as the AUS Subway Player of the Match. Baker posted 14 kills and recorded 13 digs. Teammate Julie Moore had a match high 18 kills for a 0.311 hitting percentage. Alyssa Harding defended well for the Tigers with 21 digs.
On the losing end, Siobhan Fitzpatrick was named the Reds' Player of the Match with 13 kills, while Victoria Eadle added 11.
The undefeated Tigers will take on Memorial at 5:00 pm today and the Reds will look for their first win this eason against Saint Mary's at 7:00 pm at Horton High School.
Acadia Axewomen - 3 vs Saint Mary's Huskies – 0 (25-19, 25-25, 25-19)
The host Acadia Axewomen posted a 3 game sweep of the Saint Mary's Huskies who drop to 1-1 in tournament play and 3-4 on the season. The Axewomen improve to 6-1 and 2-0 in tournament play.
Lucy Glen-Carter posted a match high 10 kills and kill percentage of 0.280 in the Axewomen's win over Saint Mary's.
A tight first set opened up on two Huskies attack errors followed by an offensive onslaught by Lauryn Renzella, Lucy Glen-Carter and Peyton DeWolfe that extended an Acadia lead to 16-10. The Axewomen weathered off the story of return kills by the Huskies and squeezed out a 25-19 win with help from Hannah Helm's kill and service ace that scored the last two of three points.
Tied at six, a bad set by the Huskies combined with a Lauryn Renzella kill started the breakaway by the Axewomen. A kill by Hannah Helm solidified the win by giving Acadia a 19-9 lead and eventual 25-15.
The fourth and eventual final set had Acadia pull out to a 11-4 lead and never relinquishing a lead less than five points in a 25-19 Axewomen win.
Huskie Bethany Smith delivered 4 kills and was named the Saint Mary's Player of the Game.
Axewomen Lauryn Renzella and Peyton DeWolf delivered 9 kills each. Regan Herrington posted a match high 26 assists in the win.
The Huskies take on UNB in their second and last game of the day at Horton High School at 7:00 pm and the Axewomen host Moncton at 7:00 pm.
Dalhousie Tigers – 3 vs Memorial Sea-Hawks – 0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-11)
The U SPORTS No. 5 Dalhousie Tigers remain undefeated at the annual AUS women's volleyball tournament after handing Memorial a 3-0 loss. The Tigers improve to 3-0 on the weekend.
Mieke DuMont led the way for the Tigers with nine kills, while teammate Sophie King, who was named the Subway Player of the Game, landed eight kills to the floor.
The Tigers had 40 kills on 99 attacks compared to the Sea-Hawks 16 and the effect was felt throughout the match. Each match was handily managed by the Tigers, with the smallest lead in the opening minutes of each set.
Hailey Oke took honours as the Sea-Hawks Player of the Game with 3 kills and 3 digs.
The battle of the weekend's undefeated teams will take place at 12:00 pm tomorrow between the Tigers and host Acadia Axewomen. Memorial will take on UNB at 12:00 pm offsite at Horton High School. Memorial will wrap up the weekend against Acadia at 4:00 pm.
Acadia Axewomen – 3 vs Moncton Aigles Bleues – 1 (25-10, 25-11, 25-11)
Second year outside hitter Lucy Glen-Carter led the Axewomen to a 3-1 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues. Carter had a match high 13 kills and added one service ace and eight digs.
Subway Player of the Match, Jamie Crocket, recorded 9 kills with a hitting efficiency of 0.900 in three of four sets she played.
The Axewomen began the first set with an 8-1 lead in the opening minutes. With a 16-8 lead, Acadia gave way to a Moncton rally that gained seven points and closed the Acadia lead to 17-15. A Moncton service error at 22-21 gave the Axewomen the wiggle room to pull off a 25-22 win.
A much tighter second set followed with a back and forth score that broke on an Acadia service error that pushed the Aigles Bleues to 15-14 lead and eventual 25-20 win.
Acadia dominated the third set, delivering an early 12-5 lead that developed into an insurmountable 23-9 advantage and 25-13 win.
A tight fourth game followed with Moncton taking a 16-12 lead off of an Ivana Urquhart kill. A Taylor Collombin service ace tied the set at 20 and a kill by Hannah Helm gave Acadia a lead they would hold onto for a 25-23 win and 3-1 match win.
Pascale Doiron was named Moncton's Player of the Game for the second time in one day. Doiron had 7 kills, four service aces and seven digs. Joanie Arsenault led Moncton with 10 kills.
Moncton wraps up the three day – five game tournament against Saint Mary's at 2:00 pm at Acadia. The Axewomen have two more matches – first of which is at 12:00 pm versus the undefeated Dalhousie Tigers and then wrap up the tournament with a make-up game against Memorial at 4:00 pm.
Saint Mary's Huskies – 3 vs UNB Reds – 2 (25-10, 25-11, 25-11)
The Saint Mary's Huskies picked up a hard fought 3-2 win against the UNB Reds at the off-campus site of Horton High School.
Lindsay Donovan led the way with 13 kills and a hitting efficiency of 0.407 and was named the Subway Player of the Game for her effort.
The Huskies squeezed out a 25-20 first set win that swung back and forth until the point of an UNB attack error that gave Saint Mary's a 13-12 lead. A kill by Bethany Smith pushed the lead to 14-12 and Huskies would not look back, winning the opening game.
UNB would not roll over and grabbed a convincing 25-18 second set win to tie the match at one. A kill by Kristen Burns gave the Reds a 12-11 lead that would not change hands for the remainder of the set.
Out to a 10-7 lead, a UNB attack error would give the Huskies a lead at 3-12 and would not be surrendered. Kills by Bethany Smith, Jordan Burley and Olivia Bell pushed the advantage to 17-13 Huskies. Saint Mary's would finish the set with kills by Lindsay Donovan and Jaime Burke to grab a 25-20 third set victory and 2-1 match lead.
The Reds pushed the match to a fifth and deciding set with a 28-26 win that could have gone either way. Two consecutive set ending kills by Victoria Eadle gave UNB the needed win to stay alive.
Ahead 7-4 early in the fifth, the Reds gave up lead to the Huskies on a service ace by Olivia Bell. Bell would post 4 service aces in the match – two of which came handy in the closing minutes of the fifth set. Two repeat kills by Lindsay Donovan pushed the Saint Mary's lead to 13-10 and the eventual 15-11 win.
Siobhan Fitzpatrick was named the UNB Player of the Game for her outstanding contribution of 20 kills and 12 digs. Victoria Eadle added an amazing 25 kills – 0.302 hitting percentage - in the losing effort.
The Reds complete the weekend with a 12:00 pm match against Memorial at Horton High School, while the Huskies take on Moncton at 2:00 pm.
