Axewomen win streak snapped by Huskies

HALIFAX - In a match of top seeds at the Homburg Centre on Friday night, the Saint Mary's Huskies (8-3) triumphed over the Acadia Axewomen (8-3) in a 3-1 victory, setting the stage for a compelling home-and-home series. The Huskies, spurred by a standout performance from left side Olivia Bell, emerged victorious with 20 kills on 47 attempts and a stellar defensive display, earning her the player-of-the-game accolade.

The Huskies seized an early lead in the first set, with Olivia Bell and right side Megan Bruhm delivering crosscourt kills, orchestrated by setter Taylor Lougheed. Madison Hann's forceful kill, set up by several layout digs from libero Morgan Hoskins, extended the Huskies' advantage. The Axewomen responded with determined play, narrowing the gap to 13-11, but the Huskies surged ahead, ultimately closing the set with an ace from service specialist Paige Deering.

The second set mirrored the first, featuring strong plays from Bell and a series of standout moments, including Lougheed's surprising kill and an impactful block on Wesley-Ann Bailey by Huskies middle Madison Hann. Despite some positive plays from the Axewomen, the Huskies dominated the set, securing a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Axewomen took their first lead, with Bailey's assist from setter Charlie Dean and stellar defensive efforts creating opportunities. The Axewomen's defensive pressure forced Huskies errors, leading to a 9-4 advantage. Bell's dynamic play, coupled with energetic digs, showcased the Huskies' resilience. Although the Axewomen built a lead, the Huskies fought back, narrowing the gap to 18-14. However, the Axewomen maintained composure, securing a 25-20 win in the set.

The fourth set saw relentless pressure from the Huskies, earning and converting on free balls. Despite a spirited effort from the Axewomen, the Huskies secured the set 25-20, clinching the match 3-1. Bell, with 20 kills, six assists, seven digs, two aces, and boundless energy, earned the player-of-the-game title.

The Huskies showcased a well-rounded effort, with Emilia Mikanovich contributing 15 digs and 11 kills, and Lougheed leading in assists with 29. The Axewomen were led by Alexia Lemay-Evans with 12 kills, while Erica Fisher and Wesley-Ann Bailey combined for 18 kills and six blocks.

The Huskies and Axewomen will face off again on Sunday in Wolfville at 2 p.m., promising another intense showdown.
