Axewomen extend win streak to six with sweep of UNB

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axewomen picked up a 3-1 victory over the UNB Reds on Saturday afternoon in Wolfville.

The opening two sets went to Acadia, making it five straight to start the weekend against UNB, but the Reds didn't allow for a three-set sweep like Friday as they battled back to take the fourth set 25-23.

Despite extending the match, UNB ultimately fell 25-20 in the fourth set to lose the match.

Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON) led with a match-high 12 kills and 13.5 points for Acadia. Wesley-Ann Bailey (Ottawa, ON) had a match-high three solo blocks and four block assists for the Axewomen, which was closely matched by UNB's Isla Olesen (Calgary, AB) who finished with three solo blocks and two block assists.

UNB was led by their player of the game, Meghan Vaags (Abbotsford, BC), who finished with 10 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists). Eve Collombin (Victoria, BC) was Acadia's player of the game, tying her career high dig total with 21. She also had four kills and an ace.

Acadia's offence was run through Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, ON), who finished with 32 assists, while Catherine Burns (Fredericton, NB) had 27 assists for the Reds.

The AUS and U SPORTS leading liberos had another outstanding showing as Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, ON) had 28 in the match, trailed narrowly by Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) finished with 20. Heading into the final week of conference action, Adams leads the country with 5.40 digs per set, while Dorsey is second in the country with 4.70.

UNB finishes their regular season on February 16 and 17 against Moncton, while Acadia wraps up their year with matches against Dalhousie February 15 and 17. The AUS semifinal round will take place February 21-25.

Following Saturday's match the Axewomen recognized their graduating seniors for 2023-24: Eve Collombin, Erica Fisher, Olivia Haley, Rebecca Dorsey, Charlotte Dean and Wesley-Ann Bailey.
