Two-time ACAA champion Ella Hickey joins Axewomen volleyball

WOLFVILLE – The defending AUS champion Acadia Axewomen are excited to announce the commitment setter Ella Hickey for the 2024-25 season.

Hickey transfers to Acadia after playing two seasons in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) with Holland College after a year with MSVU.

Over her three seasons in the ACAA she was a two-time champion, winning with MSVU in 2022 and 2023 at Holland College.

“Ella has demonstrated continuous growth while competing in the ACAA for the last couple of years,” said head coach Michelle Wood. “She's ready to make the leap to the U SPORTS stage and be a competitor. She led the ACAA in assists per set in the 2023-24 season, knows what it takes to help get her team to the CCAA national championship and she will have an immediate impact on our program from a leadership standpoint.”

During the 2023-24 season she led the ACAA in assists and assists per set with 556 and 8.18 respectively. She was also 13th in the conference in aces, finishing the year with 30. She was named an ACAA first team all-star, Holland College women’s volleyball MVP and CCAA Academic All-Canadian.

In 2023 when the Hurricanes won their championship, she was named ACAA player of the week following the championship. Over the three-day tournament she led the way for Holland, racking up a total of 71 assists, 18 digs and three service aces. She was also recognized on an ACAA second team all-star for her performance during the regular season.

To end the year, Hickey was named the Holland College leadership in sport award recipient and the Volleyball PEI intercollegiate female athlete of the year for 2023.

Outside of her recent ACAA experience, Hickey also represented PEI in beach volleyball at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

“Playing at the U SPORTS level has always been a goal of mine and I am really excited to pursue that at Acadia,” said Hickey. “I’ve been very impressed by the coaching staff and team culture at Acadia and am grateful for the opportunity to join such an impressive and ambitious program. I am also looking forward to finishing my degree at an excellent university. I can’t wait to get there and get started."

Hickey will be working towards a business administration agree while attending Acadia.
