WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen split their weekend two-game series with the Memorial Seahawks with a convincing 89-75 win in Sunday afternoon's game.
After a tough 3-point loss yesterday, Acadia looked sharp from the start of Sunday's game. The Axewomen posted 21 points in the first quarter, while the Seahawks matched with 14.
Most of Memorial's first quarter points came off a 9-point run, showing that their offence was also capable of taking over the game.
The Axewomen continued to apply pressure in the second and gradually increased their lead to 45-31 at halftime.
Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.) showed her dominance again in this game, putting up 19 points in the first half. Her decision to shoot more threes paid off, as she shot four of six from behind the arch after 20 minutes. She would visit the line 12 times in the game and make 10 of her shots.
Acadia maintained their lead throughout the third quarter, going up by as much as 20. Ellen Hatt's (Fall River, N.S.) contribution alongside Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, N.S.) and McDonald made the Axewomen that much tougher to beat.
The score going into the last quarter was 64-48.
The Sea-Hawks closed the gap in the last frame, but the Axewomen held ground to grab at 89-75 win.
"Since we lost yesterday, we thought it was super important to get the split. MUN is a super tough team and they are a lot better than their record. We knew we had to come out swinging today especially considering the loss yesterday. We knew they would have a lot motivation. As a team, we cleaned up our unforced errors," said Haley McDonald after the win.
Sydney Stewart (London, Ont.) contributed 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists, and was named her team's Subway Player of the Game.
The Axewomen shot very well from the field, making 34 of their 72 attempts, or 47.2%.
McDonald carried Acadia to their win, totaling 36 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists - more than enough to secure her the Subway Player of the Game Award.
Axewomen Ellen Hatt and Jayda Veniot contributed 14 and 19 points respectively. Hatt also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Seahawks rest until January 26th when they host UPEI.
The Axewomen are back on the court this Friday when they host a 4-point game against the UNB Reds.
