Axewomen post 71-64 win over Capers to take over second place

SYDNEY, N.S. – The Capers were unable to overcome a slow start in the opening quarter and dropped a 71-64 decision to the visiting Acadia Axewomen on a snowy Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.

Acadia jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the first quarter and was able to match Cape Breton the rest of the way for the 7-point victory. The Capers were able to claw back and take the lead in the third quarter but Acadia responded quickly taking advantage of CBU's turnovers to retake the lead heading into the fourth.

Cape Breton tried to cut into the lead late in the fourth but were unable to execute on their 3-point attempts. Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.) scored 30 points and had eight rebounds for the victors.

The Axewomen double and triple teamed Caper leading scorer Hannah Brown (North Sydney, N.S) throughout the afternoon, holding her to her league leading 27 points per game.

Turning point – Midway through the 3rd quarter the Capers held a 58-57 lead until the Axewomen stole the ball in a mad scramble on the floor to regain the lead and change momentum. The Axewomen increased their lead to 8 to head into the final quarter.
