Harvey continues to lead Axewomen Basketball team

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia University and Executive Director of Athletics Kevin Dickie announced today that women's basketball head coach Len Harvey will return to lead the Axewomen for the coming seasons after signing a multi-year contract extension.

Harvey, who was named the 2017-18 Atlantic University Sport Coach of the Year after only three seasons as bench boss, led the Axewomen to their second consecutive AUS title this past season.

Originally from Baddeck, N.S., Harvey helped guide the team to the AUS playoffs in all 4 seasons of his tenure thus far and achieved a U SPORTS No. 1 Top 10 ranking for much of the 2017-18 season.

An Acadia alumnus, Harvey was the Head Coach of the Mount Royal University Cougars before his arrival at Acadia in 2015. Harvey led the MRU Cougars in Canada West competition for two seasons after the university joined the U SPORTS in 2012.

"You hear the term 'Culture' used often, but I'm not sure I've seen many next-level transformations of a program in any sport, as we have with our Axewomen basketball team since Len arrived four years ago," said Dickie. "His pursuit for excellence and high performance is at the highest level. He has instilled both a shared vision among his student-athletes and more importantly a shared focus to do the things any successful women's basketball teams are doing north or south of the border, regardless of the challenge to make that happen."

"We feel like Acadia is becoming a place of destination for high-end recruits, and that's primarily because of Len. In our community, our Axewomen student-athletes are a big deal and that has resulted in our team leading the country in attendance which is very special for a small school and community like ours. I can't say enough about Len and am so pleased he, Kristen and their two boys love being a part of Acadia," concluded Dickie.

Harvey was ecstatic to return to his alma mater and the AUS in 2015 to take over the Axewomen basketball program. In his first season at the helm of the program, he helped guide them to a 16-4 regular season record, a 12-win improvement over the previous season.

"My family and I are very appreciative of the faith that Kevin Dickie, Chris Callbeck, President Ricketts, and the university have placed in me. Continuing the work we've started at Acadia is very important to us, and I look forward to continuing to work hard alongside our student-athletes to pursue academic excellence, develop as community leaders, and compete for a U SPORTS National Championship. There's no place like Acadia University, and I'm very grateful to further represent the institution and help lead this program."
