Axewomen improve to 6-1 with a convincing win over the Dalhousie Tigers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen defeated the Dalhousie Tigers by a score of 95-65 on Friday evening in Wolfville in front of a sold-out crowd.

The first quarter belonged to the Axewomen. The home team put up 26 points and shot 3/4 from the three-point range. The Tigers struggled from distance, making only 1 of their 5 attempts.

Thanks to a last-minute basket by the Tigers, the lead shrunk to 7 points, putting the score at 26-19 for Acadia after the first quarter.

Acadia guard Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.) led all players after 10 minutes with 8 points. She made 2 of her 3 three-pointers and added an assist before the first break.

McDonald continued to stay hot in the second quarter, bringing her point total to 21 on 8/16 shooting from the field.

The Tigers gave Acadia plenty of chances at the line, which helped build their lead to 51-36 at halftime.

Dalhousie's Bridget McSwiggan (Ottawa, Ont.) shot an efficient 4/4 from the field in the first half for 8 points.

Acadia's excellent offensive performance was complemented by the shut-down defence, holding the Tigers to only 12 points in the third quarter. The lead was improved to 76-48 after 30 minutes of play.

There was nothing Dalhousie could do in the fourth quarter to turn the game around. Acadia continued to build on their lead and stop Dalhousie's offence.

Acadia posted a 95-65 win, improving to 6-1.

Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, N.S.) of the Tigers put up 22 points to lead her team offensively. In addition, she had 6 rebounds and 2 assists, good enough to be named her team's Subway Player of the Game.

McDonald stood out all night, finishing with a game-high 28 points on 11/24 shooting. She also had 7 assists and a rebound. It was no surprise that she was the Subway Player of the Game.

Following a split weekend at Memorial, McDonald pointed out that this past week was important in getting back on track.

"This week in practice we definitely wanted to focus on the things we didn't do very well at Memorial. I think we came home and executed it pretty well. We had a bit of a lapse in the fourth quarter. I think we had a really good three quarters, but we are still working on getting the full 40 minutes of play," noted McDonald after the game.

The Axewomen return to action following the Winter Break at UPEI on January 4th and return to Stu Aberdeen court on January 11 and 12 against Memorial.
