WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen picked up their fifth win of the season Sunday, defeating the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action at Raymond Field.
Acadia struck first in the 27th minute when Sacha Clark headed in a cross from Rachel Kibble to give the Axewomen a 1-0 lead. The home side kept up the pressure throughout the half, outshooting UPEI 11-6 and earning seven corners, but carried only a one-goal advantage into the break.
The Panthers equalized in the 63rd minute when Mia Martell finished a pass from Wendy Dadzie to level the score at 1-1.
The Axewomen responded 11 minutes later. Jenna Turner converted a pass from Abby Girard in the 74th minute to restore the lead, and Acadia held on for the win.
Goalkeeper Milena Ramirez was solid in net, making seven saves, including four in the first half to preserve the early advantage.
Acadia finished with an 18-13 edge in shots and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks. Turner led the way with four shots, including three on target. Clark and Kibble each added multiple attempts.
With the victory, the Axewomen improved to 5-2-1, while UPEI dropped to 0-8-1.
Acadia returns to action Friday, Oct. 3, when they host Memorial at Raymond Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
