Axewomen widen gap between top two teams with win over SMU

HALIFAX, N.S. — The visiting Acadia Axewomen defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 (29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.  

Acadia led 10-7 and 16-11 early in the first set before SMU battled back to tie the set at 21-21. The Axewomen end the set on an 8-6 run (29-27). 

The Huskies held a slight kill advantage in the second set (14-11) and started the set down 0-3. A 10-10 tie saw another three-point run for Acadia and led 13-10. SMU had a three-point spurt of their own and were even at 13-13. The set would remain back and forth until Acadia led 23-19. Saint Mary's won the set on a 6-0 run (25-23).  

The third set started like the second set and SMU was down 0-3. Halfway thru the set SMU pulled even at 16-16. A 9-4 run for Acadia closed out the third set 25-20. 

The fourth set saw the Huskies with 13 kills compared to 12 for Acadia but the Huskies made twice as many errors (10-5) as Acadia led 10-7 early in the set. Both teams were within three-points of each other until 18-18. A 7-2 run by the Axewomen closed out the set and SMU dropped the final set 25-20.  

Acadia improves to 9-3 on the year while Saint Mary's falls to .500 (5-5) in conference action. The Axewomen sit eight points above SMU in second-place (18-10). 

In upcoming action, the Axewomen travel to Moncton January 18 and Saint Mary's returns to action Sunday at 2 pm when they host UNB.
