Bob Ferguson

Athlete - Hockey
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017

A native of Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Bob Ferguson (’59) was a multi-sport high school athlete starring in both baseball and hockey. Before entering Acadia in the fall of 1955, Ferguson was a member of the Maritime Junior Hockey Champion North Side Franklyns and baseball’s Sydney Mines Ramblers.

A four-season veteran of the Axemen hockey team, this rushing rearguard could score when called upon but is probably best remembered as a rugged, bruising defenceman who kept things honest in front of the Acadia net.

Bob captained the Axemen during his last two seasons and has been described by teammates as solid, affable, and a great leader in the dressing room. His outstanding defensive abilities were recognized by his selection to the Acadia Hockey Honour Roll, and the award presented annually to Acadia’s best defensive player is known as the Bob Ferguson Trophy.

He graduated from Acadia in the spring of 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts and a major in economics.

Bob continued his education at Dalhousie University, where he earned a law degree. He would also suit up for the hockey Tigers as the team’s assistant captain and MVP in 1962.

Bob Ferguson went on to become one of the province’s most respected and honoured judges, retiring in 2012 as Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.

Bob Ferguson joins Axemen teammates Donnie MacVicar (’57) and Bill Parker (’56) as he takes his rightful place in the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame.
