Axewomen even out record to 2-2 with win over StFX

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen remain undefeated this week and improve to 2-2 on the season, as they faced off again against the StFX X-Women. Acadia showed their ability to win consecutively with tonight's final score of 85-69 on the Stu Aberdeen Court in Wolfville, NS.

Tonight, the Axewomen saved their best for the final quarter after coming off of a Wednesday night win of 74-53, were they disappointed the StFX home crowd in their opening home game of the season in Antigonish, N.S., the Axewomen saved their best for the final quarter. 

Veteran forward Jayda Veinot posted impressive statistics including 22 points, seven rebounds, and two of four from the distant arc.

"I think the way this game went is the way this season is going to go. We have some learning to do for sure. We are seeing sparks of when we are actually playing well together and when we are playing disciplined and when we get to that point when we can play disciplined most of the time, we will have gone to where we want to be," said Veinot after the game.

Acadia Axewomen came flying out of the gate to nearly double the score in the first half. From winning the first tip-off, their ruthless defense, and their ability to make shots from anywhere on the court, the Axewomen led 23-12 after the first quarter. Jayda Veinot was an immediate standout player, netting 12 of the 23 points. She finished the game with a total of 22 points, only one point shy of her performance on Wednesday.  

By halftime, the X-Women were able to tighten the score with Acadia only leading by 5 points (39-34). Both teams were playing aggressively and the officials started calling more fouls. Eventually, a technical foul was called against St. FX as the game intensified and the scoreboard indicated a tight match. 

The third quarter saw a lot of back and forth action as the score was the closest all game to 54-50 in favour of Acadia. Thamala Thorpe of the X-women was a standout player, raking up most of the points for her team with a total of 21 points. The Axewomen were ultimately able to extend their lead in the fourth quarter and secure the dominant win...not trailing in points all game. 

The Subway Player of the Game for Acadia was Sami Russell who scored a total of 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Other notable players included Lizzie Iseyemi who netted 15 points and Eva Widmeyer who had another strong performance, hitting threes from multiple spots on the court and adding 11 points. 

The final score was 85-69. The Axewomen take on the UPEI Panthers at the next home game on November 19th at Stu Aberdeen Court in Wolfville, NS. The Axewomen travel to UNB next weekend, while the X-Women travel to Saint Mary's next Wednesday, Nov. 10.
