Axewomen finish AUS weekend tournament with 3-2 loss to Moncton

ST. JOHN'S, NL - In one of the best games of the 2022 League Tournament, the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (2-7) pulled off one of the upsets of the season when they defeated the Acadia Axewomen (7-2).

The Aigles Bleus were able to control the opening set, bursting out to an early 7-2 lead and never looking back, winning 25-22. However, the Axewomen were able to respond with an equally dominant set of their own, winning handily 25-14. In the 3rd set there was a bit more back-and-forth between both sides including a few lead changes, eventually resulting in a 25-22 win for the Axewomen.

The Aigles Bleus wouldn't let the Axewomen's momentum take control of the match, staying close throughout the entire 4th set. A Kyana Sivret service ace put Moncton up 24-23 and they would capture the final point of the set off an attack error by the Axewomen, setting up a 5th and final set. Moncton would quickly jump out to a commanding 7-1 lead and wouldn't look back, eventually taking the final set by a score of 15-7.

The Aigles Bleus were led by a trio of players on the attacking side, Sara Chiasson, Anna Paquette, and Ivana Urquhard-Mladi were active on the offensive end. Chiasson finished with a team-high 11 kills, while Paquette (10) and Urquhart-Mladi (8) trailed closely behind. Setter Cassidy Martin was extremely efficient throughout the course of the match, gathering 37 assists.

The Axewomen also relied on a trio of players to lead the way on the attack, Taylor Witty (12), Jenna Lake (11), and Wesley-Ann Bailey (10) produced well on the afternoon. Charlotte Dean led the way in assists, registering a game-high 42 to her teammates.

The Axewomen wrapped up the first half of the season with a 7-2 record - two of the losses coming from this weekend.
