Russell and Davignon named Acadia athletes of the week

Samantha Russell of the women’s basketball team and Gabe Davignon of the men’s basketball team have been named the Acadia Athletes of the Week for the period ending January 12.

Russell, a fourth-year business administration student from Dartmouth, NS, was instrumental in the Axewomen’s weekend sweep of Memorial. In Friday’s 83-47 victory, she scored 23 points and added six rebounds. On Saturday, she recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in an 81-58 win, continuing her dominance on the court.

Davignon, a third-year business administration student from Whites Lake, NS, led the Axemen to back-to-back wins over Memorial as well. He scored 19 points while shooting 58.3% from the field in Friday’s 107-78 victory. On Saturday, he added 20 points, shooting 50% from the field in an 81-68 win.

Both basketball teams will look to build on their successes next weekend as they hit the road to face Cape Breton and STFX.
