Aceron and MacDonald named Acadia athletes of the week
Frances Claire Aceron (rugby) and Cam MacDonald (hockey) have been named the Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending October 27.
MacDonald, a first-year arts major, helped the Axemen to a 6-5 victory on Wednesday night at home in dramatic fashion. He scored his hat trick goal with just five seconds remaining in regulation to give Acadia the win over Saint Mary’s. The Axemen had taken the lead 5-4 with 57 seconds remaining but were answered with 25 seconds on the clock by Saint Mary’s – setting the stage for MacDonald’s heroics. On Saturday in a 4-2 win over UPEI he didn’t personally find the back of the net but assisted on three of the four Axemen goals.
Aceron, a first-year nursing student, was named the AUS women’s rugby championship MVP on Wednesday as the Axewomen defeated STFX 29-25 in Antigonish. Aceron was tenacious on defence, making many key tackles to stifle the X-Women offence. Aside from scoring a first half try for Acadia, head coach Matt Durant said her tempo stayed at a high level for the entirety of the match.
The Axemen hit the road this week for games against Dal and STFX, while the Axewomen are off to Charlottetown for the U SPORTS women’s rugby championship.
The Acadia athletes of the week are presented by McDonald's.
