Veinot lifts Axemen to victory with final play field goal

The Acadia Axemen opened the 2023 AUS season with a 15-13 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday, highlighted by a Thomas Veinot game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Mounties secured 22 first downs compared to Acadia's nine. Their offensive efforts amassed a total of 314 yards, while Acadia managed 152 yards. The rushing yards also heavily favored the Mounties, as they gained 218 yards on the ground to Acadia's 62 yards.  

Acadia's leading receiver was Luke Macmillan, totaling 62 yards on five catches with a long of 26 yards.  

Quarterback Justin Vogels and running back Brandt Burzuk both eclipsed 100 yards on the ground. 

The lone Acadia touchdown came on an interception return touchdown by defensive back Jack Malo, who jumped a throw down the middle and sprinted to the end-zone for a 45-yard TD.  

Acadia's special teams were a highlight for the visiting team, outgaining the Mounties on kick returns and punt returns. Acadia punter Michael Adams displayed a powerful leg with 11 punts, averaging 40.3 yards per punt. Luke Macmillan had four punt returns for 83 yards.  

Next weekend Acadia (1-0) hosts St. Francis Xavier (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m.
