Axemen top Mount Allison for first win at home
WOLFVILLE — Acadia secured a 31-17 victory over Mount Allison in AUS football action on Saturday in front of 1,247 fans at Raymond Field.
Acadia opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Riley Naujoks to Julien Poirier-McKiggan. Mount Allison responded with a field goal by Beynon McKeen, but Acadia extended their lead with two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Mount Allison managed a late first-half score with a 6-yard pass from Spencer Joudry to Jon Desrochers.
In the second half, Acadia added a field goal in the third quarter, while Mount Allison's final points came from a 1-yard touchdown run by Joudry in the fourth. Acadia sealed the win with a late touchdown run by Niklas Platis, who was named player of the game for Acadia after rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
Naujoks had a strong performance, throwing for 290 yards and two touchdowns. Acadia outgained Mount Allison in total offense with 522 yards compared to 327 yards and led in first downs, 27 to 21.
Defensively, Ben Michel and Tyler MacDonald made key plays for Mount Allison, while Riley Comeau and Graham Nightingale led the way for Acadia. Mount Allison's Kirk Jean-Baptiste was named player of the game for his team.
The win improves Acadia's record to 2-3, while Mount Allison falls to 1-4 on the season.
The Axemen head to Halifax to face Saint Mary's on Friday night, while Mount Allison is on their bye week.
