Axemen fall to Gaiters in preview of AUS semifinal
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Bishop's remained undefeated with a hard-fought 29-18 victory over Acadia at Raymond Field on Saturday in front of 1,456 fans.
Bishop's struck early with a safety, followed by a field goal from Xavier Gervais. Acadia responded with a touchdown pass from quarterback Riley Naujoks to Chad Alexander. However, the Gaiters maintained control, with quarterback Justin Quirion throwing multiple touchdowns to receivers Joey Julien and Oliver Burnett to lead 19-8 at halftime.
Acadia added a field goal and a rushing touchdown from Dante Tabacu in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome Bishop's lead.
Quirion threw for 229 yards with three touchdowns on the day, with Acadia's Naujoks throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown. O'Shae Ho-Sang had a game-high 60 yards on the ground for the Gaiters, while Joey Julien had a game-high 70 yards in the air for the Gaiters.
For the Axemen, Julien Poirier-McKiggan led Acadia receivers with 52 yards.
Bishop's improved to 7-0 on the season, while Acadia dropped to 2-6.
Alex MacDonald was named player of the game for Bishop's, while Rory Litt earned the honour for Acadia.
Next week Bishop's hosts Mount Allison in the final week of conference action, while Acadia is off with a bye.
Both teams will meet again on November 2 in Lennoxville, Que. in their AUS semifinal.
