X-Men sweep home-and-home series with close win vs. Axemen

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Acadia Axemen fell to the STFX X-Men 82 – 72 on Saturday night at Stu Aberdeen Court in their second game of the season.

The Subway Player of the game was David Muenkat (Brampton, ON) who racked up 25 points to go along with 18 rebounds. For Acadia, Gabe Davignon (White Lakes, NS) scored 24 points while grabbing 7 boards.

It was a tightly contested game throughout despite STFX having the lead for the majority of the game.

The X-Men profited off of Acadia turnovers scoring 17 points on 11 Acadia turnovers. Physicality was the key for STFX, scoring 46 points in the paint and drawing contact on drives leading to 25 made free throws on 27 attempts.

David Muenkat was a force for the X-Men, grabbing a game-high six offensive rebounds; placing a great amount of pressure on Acadia's interior defense, and was able to score in bunches despite shooting 33.3% from the field.

Also scoring for STFX, Dondre Reddick (Antigonish, NS) put up 18 points, showing off an ability to finish through contact on his drives to the rim.

Gabe Davignon helped to keep Acadia in the game with his three-point shooting, going 4 – 7 from deep in the contest. Miguel Boskovic (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, ESP) added 17 points for the Axemen.

Despite the loss to the X-Men – two in a row including a 103-67 loss this past Wednesday night in Antigonish, senior forward Alex Muise (Bedford, N.S.) indicated there were some positives taken from the loss.

"We wanted to come into this game with a lot of defensive energy tonight. We knew after Wednesday night's game they probably thought they could come in here and roll over us. We just wanted to prove to ourselves and prove to the league that we could handle any team," said Muise.

"I thought we moved the ball well and we definitely had stops that lead to a transitional offense that allowed us to come down without them set. I think that really helped. This week in practice we will keep working on one-on-one defense and help defense which will translate to easy offense," noted Muise.

Acadia falls to 0 – 2 on the season and STFX advances to 2 – 0. The Axemen play their next game on Saturday, November 5th at 8:00 pm versus the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown, PEI. The X-Men will travel to Cape Breton on Friday, November 4th to face the Capers.
